What is the difference between ITIL version 2 and version 3?

All of the content in ITIL version 2 remains in version 3 and is largely unchanged. Where changes have been made they are typically minor and serve to bring ITIL up to date, correct previous mistakes or refine the content. Version 3 then expands on version 2 by adding several more modern disciplines of IT service management which were omitted in previous versions, such as the use of monitoring (event management) and catering for security in more detail (information security management). Most significantly, version 3 encapsulates all of these elements of ITIL into a single, lifecycle based approach to IT service management. In summary, version 3 brings ITIL® up to date and is an all-round improvement.

Can I just use the ITIL books to study for the exams?

Yes, but only for the ITIL V3 Foundation exam. Attending a training course is a mandatory prerequisite for taking all other exams, as is holding the foundation certificate.

OK. I’d still like to self-study for the ITIL Foundation Certificate. What’s the best way to do this?

Attending training is highly recommended, but the best option for self-study is our e-learning course. I want to be certified to highest level in ITIL. Where do I start?

You need to take and pass the ITIL V3 Foundation certificate in order to obtain all higher ITIL certification. Next, there are a couple of different certification paths you can choose to obtain the ITIL V3 Expert certificate which are explained in detail here.
